Organ donation

It generally refers to that after brain death or at the end of life. "Organ donation" includes organ or tissue donation. According to Article 4 of the Human Organ Transplant Act, when performing a transplant operation by removing an organ from a corpse, the organ donor shall be certified dead by his/her attending physician before the operation can be performed. If the donor is certified as being dead due to brain death, the procedures prescribed by the central competent health authority shall apply. In addition, Article 12 of the Human Organ Transplant Ordinance stipulates that the provision of transplanted organs shall be made through non-reimbursable donation.

Organ donation process

1. Identify potential organ donor patients (by physician evaluation or family initiative, etc.).
2. Notify the relevant members of the hospital organ transplantation team.
3. Explain the organ donation process to the family and confirm their donation willingness.
4. Assist the patient’s family to sign a donation consent form and other related documents.
5. The transplant team initiates tests, donor care, and maintenance of vital signs.
6. The donor is certified twice as being dead from brain death (For accidental death, an application for the prosecutor’s approval is required).
7. Organ donation and transplantation.
8. Assist with discharge procedures.
9. Give thank-you flower baskets and assist in completing relevant procedures.
10. Grief counseling. (Annual memorial service and forum).
11.  Case closure.
